Kenojuak Ashevak (b. 1927) has been creating masterful prints at the Kinngait Studios in Cape Dorset on Baffin Island for nearly five decades. Using the birds and other wildlife of Canada’s far north as her primary subjects, she creates powerful works that have helped bring the Cape Dorset artists to the attention of Canada and the world.
After establishing her reputation in 1960 with Enchanted Owl—an image so popular it was reproduced on a Canadian postage stamp—the prolific artist has worked nearly nonstop. She has contributed to Cape Dorset’s print collection almost every year and has completed countless special commissions, including murals, textile designs, sculptures, and, in 2004, a major stained-glass work for Appleby College, near Toronto. In addition, she has been named a Companion of the Order of Canada (the country’s highest civilian achievement award) and been inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame, among myriad other honors. This notecard collection features four of Kenojuak’s characteristically strong images.
